Why Doesn't Strengthening Always Deliver?

Your lower limb patient has been doing strengthening programmes in different versions for years, with a big emphasis on the glutes.

Sometimes they work, sometimes only partially and sometimes not at all, even when they are deemed evidence based.

Why doesn't it always deliver?

In this one-hour experiential lecture, we're moving beyond assumptions about weakness, alignment and motor control to explore the wider biomechanical and neuromuscular relationships that profoundly influence hip and lower limb control.

These are the essential unmeasurables that we are never taught, but which can transform our assessment and treatment direction.

JEMS is a dynamic systems approach to MSK rehabilitation, with a twenty-five-year history of teaching clinicians the inter-system relationships from which movement strategies emerge, and how to unravel them to restore meaningful movement maps rather than generalised muscle strength.

Understanding inter-system dynamics gets to the core of natural human function, allowing us to be more precise, more relevant and more targeted in our approach to assessment and treatment.

What You Will Explore

• The difference between functional weakness and muscular weakness
• How the autonomic nervous system affects hip function
• Why misunderstanding glute activation can compromise breathing
• How femoral and tibial rotation are critically misunderstood
• New ways to unlock a squat instead of just hoping it will improve with practice
• Why the ribs hold important clues to pelvic function
• Simple, immediately applicable techniques to use tomorrow in clinic that engage patients, initiate immediate learning and open the window for meaningful change.
